Chef

£8.90 per hour

 

The catering department operates over 2 sites (youth hostels) and provides meals for supported residents, bed & breakfast clients and conference users. This position is based at our EC1 youth hostel and is responsible for cooking dinner for approximately 100 guests per night. 

We are looking for a chef who is enthusiastic about'the whole meal experience' and is able to cook to a high standard. This is a supervisory position and the chef supervises 2 catering assistants during the shift. The meals that are served are cooked from scratch and the chef will be required to plan and cost menus to ensure that residents are offered healthy and balanced meals. This position requires excellent communication skills as we work in a team work environment and regular communication amongst different shifts and buildings is essential. The chef will need to have excellent customer care skills as the position requires for the chef to deal with customer queries and complaints and occasionally to serve food at the service counter.
 

The Chef will be responsible for:
  • Day to day running of the kitchen and all aspects of food preparation
  • Preparing and cooking residents’ evening meals and conference catering
  • Ensuring all records (such as temperature controls, food wastage and cleaning rotas) are well maintained
  • Dealing with Conference and Catering queries in the absence of the Conference and Catering Manager in relation to the day to day running of the department
  • Liaising closely with the Catering and Conference Manager and assisting in recruitment process, work reviews, inductions and training and development of staff and participating in drawing up a departmental training plan


It is essential that a chef:

·         Has an NVQ or 706/1 and 706/2 and/or relevant formal qualification
·         Has experience of cooking and supervising staff in a similar role
·         Can demonstrate leadership qualities and is committed to staff development
·         Can work under pressure and displays common sense
·         Is able to motivate a team, have good communication skills and is able to work effectively within a team
·         Is able to write clearly and concisely, is numerate and can communicate well verbally
·         Is physically fit for the demands of job


An ideal candidate will have:

·         A food and hygiene certificate or a recent chef qualification
·         Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office package and knowledge of function/conference work
·         A current First Aid qualification
